Passenger Train Services over Unusual Lines

Summer 1963

1st edition

This page was updated on 17 May 2004

The text of this edition originally appeared in the June, July and August 1963 editions of the Journal of the Stephenson Locomotive Society in Demy octavo (very similar to A5) page size, set in 8pt. type, and now appears here with their kind co-operation.

While this is not a facsimile reproduction, it has been rendered in fonts as close to the "look" of the original form as possible and the only textual corrections incorporated (apart from self evident misprints) are those published in the July and August issues. When the winter 1963/4 edition came to be prepared, some lines were deleted because they could readily be ascertained from the public timetables - they remain in the listing below. Similarly, there may be lines which - by today's criteria - would have fallen for inclusion - they remain absent from the listing below.

The original, competing for space in a monthly magazine, was closely packed - a constraint not applicable with this present medium so that the following concessions to greater ease of use have been made here:

  • each train is listed on a separate line of entry;
  • station suffixes have been spelled out in full;
  • the foreword is a composite and given once only.

    Any notes or commentary are given in red text to distinguish them from the original text. These points apart, the text is that of the first edition of what became PSUL. Anyone wanting a photostat facsimile of the original should contact the compiler.

    The summer 1963 timetable ran from Monday 17 June to Sunday 8 September 1963 (note the difference from the present practice of starting the timetable period on a Sunday).
